The development of the COVID-19 vaccine is in the spotlight around the world, considering the ongoing pandemic. Various countries continue to strive to speed up vaccination and develop new vaccine variants to be effective against mutated SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Globally, more than 13 billion vaccine doses have been administered, demonstrating collective efforts to overcome the pandemic. In Europe, vaccinations in countries such as the UK, France and Germany are reaching significant numbers, with boosters now the main focus. The Moderna and Pfizer mRNA vaccines continue to be tested for effectiveness against the Omicron variant, which has shown the ability to evade some of the immunity produced by previous vaccines. Countries in Africa are also accelerating vaccination programs, although distribution and access challenges are major problems. WHO is collaborating with various organizations to increase vaccination capacity, including providing vaccines through the COVAX mechanism. Recent innovations in vaccines have also emerged in the field of therapeutics, with the development of intranasal vaccines designed to increase protection in the respiratory mucosa, where the virus enters the body. This vaccine has the potential to reduce transmission and increase local immunity. Equally important, public awareness regarding vaccines continues to increase. The government and health organizations are actively campaigning to increase public understanding of the importance of vaccination and eradicate misinformation. Education about vaccine side effects and the importance of booster doses is key in reducing vaccine hesitancy. Overall, efforts around the world show significant progress in developing a COVID-19 vaccine. With new challenges continuing to emerge, international collaboration and scientific innovation are critical to achieving an end to this pandemic, and building global health resilience for the future.
