A news feature (also known as soft news) is a narrative that tells a story, entertains and informs the reader. It’s a chance for the writer to use his or her creativity and storytelling skills, oftentimes focusing on an in-depth look at a person, place, issue, event or topic.
Unlike news stories that focus on timeliness and are often time sensitive, a news feature can be evergreen and still have staying power even a year or five years down the road. This gives the writer a lot of leeway when it comes to writing style and content, but it’s important for the writer to maintain an entertaining and informative tone in the article.
Using personal words such as “you,” a person’s name, direct quotes and other techniques that engage the reader with the subject matter is key to keeping readers interested in a news feature. Adding action verbs and transitions to keep the story moving forward is also a great way to hold reader interest.
A profile feature is a good example of a news feature that highlights an interesting person or a topic. A good profile will start with why the person or subject is of interest and then dive into more detail about the person’s background, character and personality. A good profile also includes a climax and a “kicker” at the end that leaves the reader wanting more. This type of article is a great way to promote a new product, service or idea.
